At church we’re currently spending a few weeks looking at ‘the relevance of Christian faith for today’:

Today we’re looking at ‘Christian community in the 21st Century’, so I have been doing some reading of the ‘body of Christ’ content from 1 Corinthians 12. Paul tells the Christians in Corinth that they are all parts of the same body. In his commentary on 1 Corinthians Richard B. Hays says that it was was common for rulers to speak of society as a body, in order to keep the subordinate classes in line. The reasoning goes that if you are a slave you should obediently serve your superiors, because if you rebel against them you are damaging the body you are dependant on. Paul, however, uses the image of the body to say that the more privileged should respect and value the subordinate.
