Since my post from Sunday I’ve been thinking a bit about how we pass judgement on those we view to be ‘racist’. I remember that not too long after I was accused by my teacher of being a racist, I myself became quite quick to point the finger at those I thought were racist – [...]

One of the things I remember about primary school was clean up duty. There was always lots of rubbish in the school yard, so every now and then it’d be your turn to pick up rubbish at lunch time. If you got in trouble with a teacher, you might also have to pick up rubbish [...]

Mehrin and I went and saw Bastardy tonight. It’s a documentary about Jack Charles, an indigenous actor, cat burglar and heroin user. He talks about robbing rich people as collecting the rent from people living on his land. Very good film. You should go and see it, while it’s still screening.

We started this morning (Monday, day three of Mission Exposure) with some time to debrief and pray about what’s going through everyone’s heads. Alice was reflecting a bit on an encounter she had on Sunday night with an indigenous person in Credo, and on the differences between indigenous/colonist relationships in Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand).
We [...]

If you’re trying to find out about the Laneway Cricket match that was organised between the Indian students and the police, Cricket Victoria has an article about it here. (Unfortunately I couldn’t go. Sick in bed all day!)

I’m using the Library at Whitley today, doing some research for Sacred Space at State Youth Games. The theme for SYG this year is ‘Spirit’.
Here is something interesting from Wiradjuri elder Cecil Grant, which I read in a little book called Indigenous Australia – A Dialogue About the Word Becoming Flesh in Aboriginal Churches:
About three months [...]

I’ve been looking at a little book called Empowerment of Indigenous People by Bakthan Tychicus. It has this image on the cover:
… the squid embracing the cross was painted by Bruce Wangurra, Aboriginal artist from Jabiru Land Council, N.T.
From the Aboriginal perspective the squid is the giver of life. Within the dreaming it contains the meaning [...]

I’m on my way out to Gembrook, where the Indigenous Hospitality House community are for Easter. (Today is one year since Mehrin and I started going out.)
On my way down to Flinders Street Station I ran into an indigenous man I’ve met a few times, and he invited me to sit down with him in [...]
